What to expect at Ten Broeck Mansion

Ten Broeck Mansion sits on a hill in Arbor Hill — literally the reason the neighborhood is called that. Built in 1797-98 for Abraham Ten Broeck, an Albany merchant, brigadier general at Saratoga, and later mayor of Albany, it's a Federal-style brick house with the finest surviving hilltop garden in the city center. It's run by the Albany County Historical Association, whose volunteers give the tours themselves, and their affection for the place is immediate.

The tour walks the elegant central hall with its arched niches, the formal dining room, the parlors, and the family bedrooms with original Ten Broeck furniture. The showpiece is the wine cellar in the basement: rediscovered in 1972 when a wall was opened during renovations, it still held its original 1820s-era bottles of Madeira and sherry — a few remain on display, along with the ledger showing what the family paid for them. The two-acre garden behind the house is open free during museum hours and hosts summer concerts.

Sits in Arbor Hill, which has been through hard decades but is genuinely on the up — the mansion is safe to walk to in daylight but drive or Uber after dark. Best combined with a morning at the State Capitol and lunch downtown before heading north. The Historical Association runs an excellent 'Cocktails at the Mansion' event on select summer Fridays that's worth timing a visit around.
