What to expect at New York State Museum

The New York State Museum sits at the south end of Empire State Plaza and is the flagship history and natural history museum for the entire state. Founded in 1836, it holds more than 15 million objects — everything from a full-size mastodon skeleton pulled from a Cohoes bog to the fire truck that responded to the World Trade Center on 9/11. It is one of the very few museums of this scale in the United States that charges nothing to enter, which alone makes it the single best rainy-day stop in Albany for families and the honest first pick for any visitor with an afternoon to spare.

A visit runs top to bottom across four floors. The main level splits into three long halls: Adirondack Wilderness with its taxidermy moose and beaver ponds, the New York Metropolis Hall with a full IRT subway car you can walk through, and the sobering World Trade Center exhibit with recovered steel and a Ladder 3 fire truck. Upstairs the Native Peoples of New York gallery walks through Haudenosaunee longhouses and Lenape wigwams. The fourth-floor terrace holds the 1890s Empire State Carousel, which actually spins — kids ride free.

Come on a weekday morning if you want the carousel without a line; Saturday afternoons the family crowd fills the main hall. Allow three hours minimum, four if you have children. The cafe on the main floor is fine for coffee but skip lunch — walk five minutes north into the Empire State Plaza concourse for better options. The museum shares its building with the State Library and State Archives, both worth a glance. Coat check is free just inside the Madison Avenue doors.
