Why people stay in Center Square
Center Square is the tight grid of brownstone-lined streets between the Capitol and Washington Park, with Lark Street running down the middle as the neighborhood's spine. On a Friday at 9pm the sidewalks outside The Lark Tavern, El Loco, and Cafe Hollywood are actually busy — this is where downtown workers, state employees, and students overlap. It's the most walkable and most residential-feeling part of central Albany.
Families with young kids might find the Lark Street bar scene loud on weekend nights, especially between State and Madison. But midweek it's calm, and the tree-lined side streets (Lancaster, Jay, Chestnut) are genuinely beautiful. Skip it if you want a chain hotel with a pool — the lodging here is small B&Bs and a handful of boutique inns, most under 15 rooms.
The neighborhood is a designated historic district, built up mostly between the 1830s and 1870s as Albany's merchant class moved uphill from the river. By day it's quiet and almost residential — state workers cut through on foot toward the Capitol by 8:45am, and the cafes fill for a fast lunch rather than a lingering one. Come back after 5pm and the same blocks turn into the neighborhood's actual social hours, with stoops and sidewalk tables doing double duty as living rooms.
Center Square suits anyone with Capitol or Empire State Plaza business, a couple wanting a boutique inn over a chain, or a visitor who wants to walk everywhere and skip the rental car entirely. It's the wrong base if you need a pool, a gym, or guaranteed elevator access — for that, the corridor around Wolf Road or the airport hotels will serve you better, at the cost of losing the walkability that makes this neighborhood worth choosing in the first place.
The Morgan State House on Washington Ave and the State House Inn on Chestnut are the two most reliable picks, both around $150-190 a night. Independent guesthouses on Lancaster Street run $110-160. Avoid the couple of listings labeled "Center Square" that are actually on lower Madison south of Lark — that stretch is fine but noisy from I-787 traffic. Street parking is metered until 6pm and free after; overnight parking on residential blocks is legal but competitive. Expect the top of that price range during legislative session, roughly January through June, when the Capitol fills with staff and lobbyists, and the bottom of it in late summer when the city empties out. Book The Morgan State House at least three weeks ahead for a spring weekday, since its handful of rooms sell out fast. If both small inns are full, the Residence Inn Albany Washington Avenue a few blocks south covers the same walk to the Capitol, trading neighborhood character for a bigger, more predictable building.

Getting around Center Square
From the airport take CDTA Route 737 to downtown (25 min, $1.50) then walk 10 minutes uphill on State or Washington. From Albany-Rensselaer Amtrak, a $15 Uber is easiest. Inside the neighborhood you don’t need transit — everything is a five-minute walk. CDTA Route 10 runs along Madison Ave to Washington Park if you’re heading to Pine Hills. A CDTA day pass costs $4 and covers every route in the region, worth buying if you’re also heading out to Crossgates Mall or the airport-corridor hotels. Ubers can take 10-15 minutes to arrive from Lark Street after 10pm, so build in time on a bar night.
