Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
The 1852 twin-spired brownstone cathedral just south of the Capitol — one of the first Gothic Revival cathedrals in the United States, and one of Albany's tallest interiors.

What to expect at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, completed in 1852 to designs by Patrick Keely, was one of the first purpose-built Gothic Revival Catholic cathedrals in the United States and remains one of the largest by interior volume in the northeast. It's built of Schenectady brownstone with twin spires reaching 210 feet, and it stands directly across from Empire State Plaza on Eagle Street — you can see it from almost anywhere downtown. Free to enter any day, and the interior is much more elaborate than the sober exterior suggests.
Inside, a soaring nave of clustered stone piers rises to a vaulted timber ceiling painted deep blue with gold stars. The rose windows over the transepts are original 1850s stained glass by Henry Sharp of London. The Blessed Sacrament chapel behind the high altar contains a carved oak altarpiece imported from Belgium in 1889. The crypt below holds several 19th-century bishops of the diocese; it's open for viewing by request at the parish office. The pipe organ, a 1930 Casavant instrument with 3,500 pipes, is played at all Sunday masses.
Genuinely peaceful mid-morning weekday visit — you'll often be the only visitor. Free daily concerts by the cathedral organist on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:30 (30 minutes, arrive by 12:15). Modest dress requested but not enforced. Best combined with a visit to the State Capitol directly across Eagle Street. Photography allowed except during services.
