Irish American Heritage Museum
A small, sharply-curated museum on Broadway telling the Irish story in America from the Famine ships to the Kennedys — with rotating exhibits that punch well above the ticket price.

What to expect at Irish American Heritage Museum
The Irish American Heritage Museum opened its permanent Albany location on Broadway in 2012 and has quietly become one of the sharpest ethnic-history museums in the northeast. Albany received Irish immigrants in enormous numbers — by 1855 nearly a third of the city was Irish-born — and the museum uses that local weight to tell the national story: the Famine, the coffin ships, the Draft Riots, the political machines, the labor movements, the Kennedys. It's small — one long gallery — but the object selection is genuinely good.
The permanent exhibit walks chronologically. You'll see ship manifests from the 1840s Famine crossings, actual immigrant trunks and rosaries, Civil War 69th New York regimental items, a corner devoted to Irish women in domestic service, and a Kennedy-era section with Boston campaign material. Rotating exhibits change roughly quarterly — recent ones have covered Irish women in medicine, the Troubles, and Irish contribution to American labor. There's a small research library upstairs that scholars can use by appointment.
Perfect one-hour stop and easily combined with the New York State Museum or Empire State Plaza — all three are within four blocks. The museum shop has a well-chosen selection of Irish books, music and jewelry that outclasses most tourist shops. Try to visit on a First Saturday when the museum is free and often has live traditional music sessions in the morning.
