What to expect at Empire State Plaza

Empire State Plaza is the vast marble complex that Governor Nelson Rockefeller pushed through Albany between 1965 and 1978 — controversial when built, listed on the National Register now, and one of the most cohesive modernist government complexes in the world. Ninety-eight acres of stone, four office towers, the domed Legislative Office Building, the flying-saucer performance hall known as The Egg, and a quarter-mile-long reflecting pool linking it all. It's genuinely free to walk, and the underground concourse doubles as a museum of modern American art.

The New York State Art Collection scattered through the concourse is the real surprise: 92 works by Mark Rothko, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Helen Frankenthaler and others, commissioned by Rockefeller in the 1960s and 70s and displayed permanently along the underground walkways. Head to the Corning Tower for the free 42nd-floor observation deck — on a clear day you see the Catskills, the Berkshires, and Vermont's Green Mountains. In summer the reflecting pool hosts free concerts and a farmers market on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Best walked north to south, starting at the State Capitol steps and ending at the New York State Museum, which anchors the south end. Allow two hours to see the art and the observation deck, half a day if you're going into the museums. Winter it becomes a covered concourse city — you can walk from the Capitol to the Museum entirely indoors, useful on a cold day. Ice skating on the reflecting pool December-February is free with rental skates $5.
