What to expect at Albany Institute McKinney Library

The McKinney Library, on the third floor of the Albany Institute of History & Art, is the working research library for one of America's oldest museum collections. It holds roughly one million manuscript pages, 20,000 books, 100,000 photographs, and the papers of Upper Hudson merchants, families, artists and civic institutions dating from the 1650s Dutch trading period onward. Access is free for anyone with a genuine research purpose — genealogy, academic work, house history, journalism — and the librarians are unusually helpful with newcomers.

You email the librarian a few days ahead describing what you're looking for. They pull materials and set them up on the long reading tables. In practice the collection is deepest in Dutch-Anglo colonial commerce (Van Rensselaer, Schuyler, Ten Eyck family papers), 19th-century Albany civic and industrial history, and the Hudson River School painters — the museum owns primary correspondence between Thomas Cole and his patrons. Photography of most materials is permitted with a phone; scanning services are $0.25 per image.

Best for anyone with a specific question — an ancestor who lived in Albany, a house whose deed history goes back to the 1800s, a Hudson River School artist you're writing about. The librarians will not do the research for you but will point you to exactly the right box within 20 minutes of arrival, which is unusual. Bring photo ID, a laptop, and a pencil (no pens allowed at the tables). The library shares an entrance with the main museum, and library visitors do not pay museum admission.
