Menands is a 2.3-square-mile village sandwiched between Albany and Watervliet on the west side of the Hudson. It's built around Broadway (US Route 9) and the Menands Regional Market, the wholesale produce and flower market that's been operating since 1932. On a weeknight at 9pm it's quiet residential and closed commercial — this is a village people live in, not visit.
For a family it makes sense as a budget base if you’re doing regional day trips: Saratoga, Troy, and downtown Albany are all within 15-20 minutes by car. The chain hotels near I-787 exit 6 offer $90-120 rates with free parking, which is real money saved over downtown. Skip if you want to walk anywhere interesting — Menands is a driving neighborhood.
The village's identity is really the market and the cemetery. Everything else — the Broadway strip of gas stations, a supermarket, a diner or two — exists to serve the people who live here, not visitors passing through. There's no village green, no cluster of shops to browse, and no evening scene of any kind. If you're the type who wants to step out of a hotel and find something happening, book downtown Albany or Troy instead and treat Menands as a drive-through.
Where Menands earns its keep is logistics. It sits close enough to I-787 and I-87 that a car rental turns the whole Capital Region into a 20-minute radius, and the hotel rates reflect a suburb rather than a destination. Business travelers doing work at the Harriman State Office Campus or Albany Med sometimes end up here by default, not by choice, and that's a fair way to think about it.
The newer chain hotels a short drive north in Latham and Colonie — Homewood Suites by Hilton Albany, TownePlace Suites Latham Albany Airport, and Hampton Inn Albany Wolf Road — run $105-140 in high season (May-October, plus SUNY move-in and Saratoga racing weeks) and drop to $85-105 in winter, all with free parking and breakfast. A couple of older motor inns on Broadway itself are cheaper ($85-100) but reviews are uneven. Book the newer chains — the price difference of $20-30 a night is worth it for families. Avoid Broadway south of the Menands Bridge after dark for walking; drive instead, and treat Menands purely as a sleeping base rather than an evening destination.

381 Broadway. Wholesale market with a retail farmers market Saturday mornings 8am-1pm. Best cheap produce in the region if you have kitchen access.
1015 Broadway. Small independent breakfast/lunch spot, coffee under $4, breakfast sandwiches around $7. This is where locals go before their commute.
The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail runs through Menands along the river. Access from the Menands Market area. Paved, good for cycling, connects Albany to Watervliet and beyond.
684 Broadway, open early morning to 11pm daily. Practical stop for self-catering or filling a cooler before a day trip to Saratoga; it's the only real grocery store in the village and the fastest errand you'll run here.

Getting around Menands
From Albany International Airport it's about 10 minutes by car via I-87 south, and most visitors will want a rental since Menands itself has no car-rental counter. From downtown Albany, it's 10 minutes via I-787 north, or CDTA Route 22 in 20-25 minutes with a fare of $1.75. Inside Menands you’ll drive — Broadway has sidewalks but nothing worth walking to between stops. The village's honest transport advantage is highway access: I-787 exit 6 puts you on the interstate in under two minutes, which matters far more here than any bus route does.
