Why people stay in Delaware Avenue
Delaware Avenue runs south from Lark Street through the Delaware neighborhood and into Delmar. The stretch between Morton Avenue and Whitehall Road (locally called "the Del") has evolved over the past decade into arguably the best small-scale restaurant and independent-shop strip in the city — Delaware Supermarket for produce, Cardona's Market for Italian, Iron Gate Cafe South, The Yard, Cafe Capriccio nearby. On a Saturday at 9pm the sidewalks are pleasantly busy.
For a family that wants a walkable urban stay outside the government core, this is a strong choice. Cheaper than Washington Park, more character than Colonie, safer-feeling than downtown after dark. Skip it if you need to be within walking distance of the Capitol — you'll be relying on CDTA Route 18 or a rideshare for museum days.
Morning here has its own rhythm: the bakeries on Delaware near Bertha Street open at 7am, joggers cut through Lincoln Park before work, and by 8:30 the sidewalk tables outside Iron Gate Cafe South fill with regulars ordering $4 cortados. Weekday lunch is quieter than the dinner rush, mostly Albany Med staff and neighborhood residents rather than tourists. The block between Marshall and Bertha has the highest concentration of storefronts; south of Whitehall the strip thins into houses and small offices, so plan your walking around that middle stretch rather than covering the full length of Delaware Ave end to end.
Delaware Avenue is not the place for a conference trip or a one-night business stopover — there is no full-service hotel on the corridor and the nearest large properties are downtown near the Convention Center. It suits a family or a couple staying four or five nights who want to cook some meals from Cardona's Market, walk to dinner without a car, and use the bus on museum days. In deep winter the strip is noticeably quieter after 8pm; on summer weekends, especially during the Alive at Five season downtown, overflow diners spill south onto Delaware.
There are a couple of small inns and a growing set of Airbnb apartments on the residential side streets (Marshall, Whitehall, Bertha) at $110-160 a night. No chain hotels inside the corridor itself. Look for listings on the west side of Delaware Ave — the east side backs into the Second Ave residential neighborhood which is fine but quieter. Free street parking after 6pm and on Sundays is a real quality-of-life advantage. High season, roughly June through October, pushes the better Whitehall and Bertha listings toward $160-180 a night, so book six weeks ahead for a whole-house rental. Off-season, January through March, the same units often drop to $95-120 with easy same-week availability. If you need a hotel bed rather than an apartment, the closest options are downtown near Washington Park or Center Square, a 20-minute walk or a short Route 18 ride — treat Delaware Ave as a dinner-and-shopping base and book your room a few blocks north.

Outdoor municipal pool inside Lincoln Park, open late June through Labor Day, roughly 11am-6pm, entry a few dollars for non-residents. Shaded seating around the deck, lifeguards on duty, a good midday break for families walking the Delaware Ave shops in July heat.

Getting around Delaware Avenue
From the airport, Route 737 to downtown then transfer to CDTA Route 18 (Delaware Ave) — total about 45 minutes. Uber runs $25. From Amtrak, Uber is $18. Route 18 runs Delaware Ave every 20-30 minutes and connects to downtown in 15 minutes. Driving is easy, street parking abundant. A taxi or rideshare directly from Albany International Airport to Delaware Ave runs 20-25 minutes depending on traffic on I-787. Once you are staying on the corridor, most of what matters — restaurants, the Spectrum Theatre, Lincoln Park — is within a 10-minute walk, so a car is optional unless you are also planning day trips to Delmar. Street parking is unmetered on most side streets, and the CDTA Route 18 stop outside Delaware Plaza is the most reliable pickup point heading downtown.
